THE GOOD AND THE BADJuventus wins the Coppa Italia, but Allegri is sacked

  • The Bianconeri have lifted the Coppa Italia for the 15th time in their history.
  • The club from Turin has announced that Massimiliano Allegri (56 years old) will be relieved of his managerial duties.

The final of the Coppa Italia was played between Atalanta and Juventus at the sold-out Stadio Olimpico, AS Roma’s home ground, which served as a neutral ground for the two Italian giants. Juve’s win was secured through the early goal scored by Dušan Vlahović (24 years old), being also the only one of the entire match. The Serbian striker scored again around the 75th minute, but it was ruled offside by VAR.

This win meant that Juventus won their 15th Coppa Italia, the most any Italian club has. It is a record that will probably not be broken in the near future, as they have a 6 title lead over AS Roma and Inter Milan, who both have 9 Cups. Juve also has the chance to win their 10th Supercoppa Italiana, as they will face AC Milan in the semifinals at the beginning of the next season in Saudi Arabia, the host country of this competition. The other semifinal is between Serie A winner Inter Milan and Atalanta.

Allegri is out!

Even though Juventus’ situation may seem better, as they finished 4th and returned to Champions League football after 3 years and won Coppa Italia, the disputes between coach Massimiliano Allegri and the board of the club have continued for some time now. Therefore, only two days after the cup final, Juventus officially announced that the manager had been sacked.

The board of the Old Lady has expressed their dislike for some of Max Allegri’s behavior, which struck again during the last minutes of the final. A Juventus player was fouled in the box, but a penalty was not given, causing the Italian manager to have an aggressive reaction towards the referee. He received a red card for this outbreak.

Cristiano Giuntoli (52 years old), the sporting director of Juventus, has allegedly already begun discussions with Thiago Motta (41 years old), the current manager of Bologna to replace Allegri as soon as possible. Ironically, the next match of the Serie A season will be Juventus facing off against Bologna.

Not his first rodeo

Massimiliano Allegri had another, much more successful spell at Juventus, between 2014 and 2019. He replaced the freshly resigned Antonio Conte (54 years old). He managed 5 consecutive Serie A titles, 4 consecutive Coppa Italia titles, and 2 Supercoppa Italiana trophies with the Bianconeri, while also helping them reach 2 Champions League finals, which Juventus sadly lost against Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. Some fans might consider Allegri one of their best-ever managers, because when he left back in 2019, Juventus had their best win percentage in their whole history, over 70%!

After taking a 2-year break, Allegri took over from Andrea Pirlo (44 years old), who was sacked in 2021 and ended his first season back trophyless, something that did not happen at Juventus in 9 years. The next season continued the trophy drought, marking Allegri’s second time at the Turin-based club almost at opposite ends from the first one. It’s safe to say that the Coppa Italia they just won, alongside qualifying for the Champions League have redeemed Allegri’s position to some extent, but it is too late now for such discussions, as the Italian is no longer the club's manager.
