- Manchester United’s results throughout the year have caused them to remain outside the top four, which means that they will not be present in the next Champions League campaign
- Their draw against Burnley gives the Red Devils less hope for a 5th place, which guarantees a spot in the Europa League
During matchday 35 of the Premier League season, Manchester United faced Burnley at Old Trafford. Even though all odds were against the relegation-threatened Burnley, they still managed to get an equalizer, through Amdouni’s 87th minute penalty, after a pretty even contest with the ball possession being almost split equally.
A series of critical errors were made by United players which led to the late penalty for Burnley. Andre Onana (28 years old) received an unexpected pass from Casemiro (32 years old), who inexplicably headed the ball toward the keeper. Onana wanted to clear it, but instead hit Amdouni in the face. VAR ruled the play as illegal, therefore Burnley managed to get a well-deserved one point, which could be crucial in their relegation battle with Luton and Nottingham Forest. There is a 2-point difference between the 3 sides.
This unexpected result has diminished even more United’s hope for the 5th place, which is currently occupied by Tottenham, by a 6-point margin. It could be reduced, depending on how the Spurs approach the game against Premier League leader, Arsenal.
United has four matches left this season: vs. Crystal Palace (A), vs. Arsenal (H), vs. Newcastle United (H) and vs. Brighton (A). Depending on their form, they could seal either a Europa League or Conference League spot for next season. If things take a dark turn, they could even be overthrown by Newcastle, who is currently just one point behind, in 7th place.
After almost losing against Championship side Coventry City in the FA Cup semifinals, fans are fuming with the recent results of the Red Devils. Even though they had a 3-goal lead, Coventry equalized and the game had to be decided on penalties. Before this intense game, there was a 4-match period when United didn’t manage to win any, as they drew 3 times and lost once against Chelsea.
- CIFRA: 47% of their Premier League matches were won by Manchester United so far this season
Fans are also fuming about the VAR, who reportedly didn’t intervene in the 90th minute, when Antony (24 years old), the one who previously scored, attempted a shot that was blocked by a Burnley player’s hand.
Ten Hag - In or Out?
Erik ten Hag (54 years old) has come forward with a strange statement after the shocking draw against Burnley.
The bold opinion of the Dutch manager was not well-received by fans, who have taken to social media to ask if he is serious and to ridicule him. Even though the coach reassured the press multiple times that the board is fully supporting him and his plans to rebuild the team, many people are now starting to really question the validity of his words. It’s safe to say that if United does not play European football next season, nobody will be happy, including the board.
- POLL: Should ten Hag get a 3rd season at Manchester United? Yes/No
Manchester United could salvage themselves from negative opinions coming from all directions if they manage to win the FA Cup final. They will play against their neighbors, Manchester City, in a fiery Manchester Derby at Wembley Stadium, on 25th May. Of course, City is the favorite to win it, but United may show their dedication to not finish the season trophyless.
- POLL: Who will win the FA Cup? Manchester United/Manchester City
The Red Devil’s Champions League campaign was disastrous, finishing dead last in their group, under Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, and Galatasaray. In addition, they were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Carabao Cup, which they won last season, by Newcastle.
