DREAM ENDING? Reus' last game for Borussia Dortmund is the Champions League Final

  • Marco Reus (34 years old) announced earlier this month that he will not extend his contract with Borussia Dortmund.
  • The squad led by Edin Terzić (41 years old) has reached the Champions League Final against Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium

In the beginning of the month, a video was uploaded by Borussia Dortmund’s official YouTube channel, where Marco Reus officially announced that after 12 years spent at the club, this season will be his last there.

While being visibly trying to contain his powerful emotions, the German footballer thanked first the fans, then the teammates and staff for being together with him at both good and hard times.

The short video message ended with Reus assuring everyone that despite this sad announcement, he is still fully focused on the remaining games of the season and on bringing the Champions League trophy to Dortmund once again.

The last match is the most important

Marco Reus’ last game in the black and yellow kit will be the Champions League Final. They will play against Spanish champions Real Madrid at the Wembley Stadium, in London, on the first day of June 2024.

In the 12 years spent at the club, Reus managed to only win the DfB Pokal and the DfL Supercup 2 times each, meaning that a Champions League trophy would not only be his first, but his most important of his entire career.

Back in the 2012-2013 Champions League campaign, during Reus’ first season at the senior team of Borussia Dortmund, the final consisted of a Der Klassiker between Germany’s biggest two clubs.

Sadly, the team that was led by Jürgen Klopp (56 years old) at that time lost to their eternal rivals, Bayern Munich, due to a late goal scored by Arjen Robben (40 years old). After that, they have only been able to go as far as 3 quarter-finals, until this season.

Marco Reus is the leader of his current team in the Champions League. He has the most goals, 24 and the most appearances, 71, in Dortmund’s whole history. Another BVB veteran, Mats Hummels (35 years old) is not far behind, with only 6 appearances left to catch his teammate and good friend.

Reus’ time at Dortmund

Over the last 12 years, Marco Reus has played over 420 games for Borussia Dortmund. He has scored almost 170 times, making him the second highest scorer of the club’s history, only behind Adi Preißler, who played in the 1950s and has 8 goals more.

Reus also managed to achieve the number of 130 assists, which means he is the undisputed best decisive passer of Dortmund.

Beyond these impressive numbers and statistics, Reus also won many individual awards during his time at Borussia Dortmund. He was the Bundesliga Player of the year 3 times and the German Footballer of the Year 2 times.

During 2018, he even managed to win the Bundesliga Player of the Month award 3 times.
