Clinical Performance! Barcelona scores 5 away from home

  • Barcelona extended their unbeaten La Liga streak with a dominant 5-1 win over Villarreal.
  • Robert Lewandowski (36 years old) starred with two goals as the Catalans remained top of the league.
  • Villarreal struggled defensively despite flashes of brilliance from Ayoze Pérez (31 years old).

On the 22nd of September, during matchday 6 of the LaLiga season, Villareal hosted Barcelona at the Estadio de la Ceramica. The game ended in a devastating 1-5 loss for the home side.

Barcelona Dominates Early

The Catalan side, coming off a midweek Champions League loss to Monaco, quickly showed their resilience by dismantling Villarreal's defense.

Lewandowski was the star of the first half, netting twice and continuing his amazing season under Hansi Flick, as he already has 6 goals in 6 games in the Spanish league. The Polish striker could have scored a hattrick, but missed a penalty in the 67th minute.

Despite some pressure from Villarreal, who found themselves a goal through Pérez, Barcelona maintained control of the game with solid possession.

Raphina (27 years old) also managed to score a brace and secure Barcelona's win in the end of the game.

Villarreal’s Defensive Struggles

Villarreal, playing without key forward Gerard Moreno (32 years old), showed occasional promise in attack but were repeatedly undone by their defensive lapses.

Pérez tried to rally his side, and his excellent footwork troubled the Barcelona backline, but the Yellow Submarine lacked consistency at the back. The hosts' defense struggled particularly against Lamine Yamal (17 years old) and Lewandowski.

Villarreal’s attempts to claw back in the second half were nullified by Barca’s clinical finishing and organization. They also had 3 disallowed goals by VAR, due to offside positions.

The Golden Boys

Lamine Yamal, already, proved why he’s quickly becoming one of Europe's hottest young talents at the 2024 Euros. His dribbling, pace, and calm finishing put Villarreal to the sword. Hansi Flick (59 years old) praised his impact, calling him a "game-changer."

Apart from him, there are other several youngsters Flick likes to implement and even start in order to give them lots of minutes to improve. The best example is Pablo Torre (21 years old), who scored Barcelona's third goal and assisted Lewandowski's first in this game.

Other young players who impressed most fans during this match were defenders Sergi Dominguez (19 years old) and Gerard Martin (22 years old).

Barcelona’s win keeps them top of La Liga, maintaining their perfect start to the domestic campaign with six wins out of six matches.
