- Wrexham FC finished second in the EFL League Two season, 4 points under Stockport County
- This is the second consecutive year they have been promoted, and are now preparing for League One football
Wrexham FC is the oldest Welsh club and third oldest football association in the world, being founded back in 1864. Their home turf, the Racecourse Ground is also the oldest stadium that still hosts international matches, the first one being played in 1877.
They have recently gained a massive wave of popularity due to the acquisition of the club by actors Ryan Reynolds (47 years old) and Rob McElhenney (47 years old) in 2020.
In addition, the club received its own docuseries that debuted on Hulu and Disney+, named “Welcome to Wrexham”, which only made its international fanbase even larger, a very uncommon thing for a club that at that time played in the fifth tier of English football.
During the last season, Wrexham was still in the National League but managed to cause multiple upsets in the FA Cup. They beat second-division side Coventry City in the third round and drew Premier League team Sheffield United in the fourth round of the cup.
Sadly, the replay ended in a win for Sheffield, but it was a very impressive run for a club that was poorly ranked.
Two years in a row
During that season, Wrexham managed to finish first in the league comfortably by a 4-point margin. They acquired a staggering total of 111 points in 46 games!
This season it wasn’t as impressive in comparison with the last, but they still finished the season in second place, which guarantees automatic promotion to the third tier of English football.
- POLL: Will Wrexham manage to get promoted again next year? Yes/No
Paul Mullin (29 years old), probably the most famous player for Wrexham currently played a crucial part in these successful years of the club. In both years he managed to be the second top scorer of the respective league, having 38 goals in the National League and 24 goals in the EFL League Two.
Manager’s reaction
In an interview after the home win against Stockport County, the Red Dragon’s coach was asked what’s next for the club.
Phil Parkinson (56 years old) replied, emphasizing the big sporting gap between divisions, therefore the squad needs to improve. He also confirmed there are chances that some players move to other clubs because many contracts expire this summer.
I'm sure decisions have got to be made and we'll just do them fairly and honestly Phil Parkinson
